Will England Win The Ashes? October 15th, 2010

admin

The big question of the winter is “will England win the ashes?” I don’t claim to be an expert on cricket, but like everyone else I have an opinion on who’s going to win. In short, I think England will win in Oz for the first time in while. Carry on reading if you want to find out why!

Graeme Swann

Swann is definitely one of the top bowlers in the world at the moment, and he definitely can make a huge impact in the ashes. I predict that he’ll score some handy runs down the order to, which can make the difference between a win or a loss. The great thing about Swann is that he has a knack of picking up wickets in his first over, which means that he’s very good at breaking partnerships. On flat wickets, he could make the difference. The other factor is whether or not we play another spinner – which is something that will be decided on a game by game basis.

Australia Aren’t What They Were

I’m not saying that Australia don’t have any good players, because that obviously wouldn’t be true, but the great ones have all gone. Warne, McGrath, Hayden etc have all moved on, and in their place are good players, but not great ones. Ponting is a very good player, but he seems to be in a run of bad form and may not make the big impact that’s required of him. Other players seem to be making improvements to their game though. Hauritz, for example, is developing into a good spin bowler, although he probably isn’t up to the same level as Swann, so this is where England will hold an advantage.

Kevin Pieterson

KP has been a disaster recently, but I really believe that he plays best on the big stage, and there is no bigger than the ashes. He was injured for most of the last series, so he’ll be desperate to make an impression. I hear that he’s playing in South Africa leading up to the series to, so hopefully that will allow him to get some form back. England desperately need him to be playing well, because he’s too good to drop, but when he’s playing badly the team have to carry him more than they should.

There are a number of other reasons why I think England will win the Ashes. I think the team has finally developed a winning habit, and truly believe they can go there and have a good chance. This hasn’t been true of all England teams. Also, this time the team are properly preparing with matches beforehand, and I think that will make a difference.

There are some things that go against England though, so it is definitely going to be close. Home advantage always plays a part, and Ponting will definitely not want to lose another series to England as captain. The lack of a top class pace bowler in the England squad may be a problem, as the lack of variation can work against us if the ball isn’t swinging. Either way, it should be a fantastic series and I can’t wait for it to start.

The Problem With Daytime TV October 15th, 2010

admin

I don’t usually have time to watch day time television anymore, but from my student days I can really see why people see it as a bit of a joke. On BBC 1 there’s an endless stream of antique and real estate shows, all very similar to the next. ITV have chat shows, and now their new shoq with Adrian Childs which doesn’t seem to have taken off. Then there’s Loose Women, and the less said about that the better.

Jeremy Kyle has to be one of the most ridiculous shows ever to clog up our TV screens. A constant stream of people with emotional problems enter the stage, only to be slated and humiliated by Jeremy, before being sent backstage to get “help” from the rest of the team. It really is TV of the lowest common denominator.

The antique shoes aren’t much better. I can understand one antique show during the day, but they seem to be endless. I understand they are cheap TV to fill up the airwaves when most people aren’t watching, and maybe they are what daytime viewers want, but it’s difficult to see how they can provide much entertainment. The same goes for house buying shows, surely people get bored of endless talk about buying houses?

Aside from chat and antiques shows, you also have the choice of watching repeats of Friends or a 24 hour news channel. The only good thing about daytime TV is that I rarely have to watch it!

Choosing A Workout Song October 15th, 2010

admin

Nothing makes a workout go quicker than some good music, but what makes the perfect song for exercise? Here are a few things that I think make the difference.

Tempo

There’s no doubt that a fast, upbeat song is going to be better for exercising. If I try listening to a slow song, even one I really like, then exercise at a high pace becomes much more difficult. A fast tempo doesn’t necessarily mean you have to listen to drum and bass or techno music, but it should have a strong beat and keep you pumped up.

Upbeat

Listening to a dreary, depressing song probably isn’t going to get you in the mood for a hard workout. An exercise song doesn’t have to be over the top happy, but it shouldn’t make you depressed either!

Personal preference

I’ve tried listening to techno and similar music while exercising, but I just don’t enjoy listening to it. Even though it ticks all the boxes for a good exercise song, it’s still important to find a playlist that you enjoy listening to, otherwise an exercise session can drag on for a long time.

So the next question is, where do you find songs like this? There are a number of websites online where you can download other people’s playlist, and these are often a good place to start. Finding new music can be tough, especially if you don’t like listening to what’s usually on the radio, so getting music off other people is often the best way to go.

A great place to start is Spotify. If you don’t have an account, you can sign up for a relatively cheap deal and listen to as much music as you want without adverts. There are still invites for free accounts floating around the internet that you may be able to find too. The best thing about Spotify is that you can instantly download someone else’s playlist and start listening to it from a variety of different sites. If you have friends who like to work out then you can also swap playlists with them.

The problem with Spotify is that you’ll need to use an MP3 player that supports it when you play it, otherwise you won’t be able to listen to it while away from your computer.
